Near Future

unfulfilled intention in the past


 The construction “Voy a + infinitive” is very common in Spanish and is used to express immediate future actions or nearby plans. It gives a stronger sense of intention than the simple future.

Ir is an irregular verb and its present conjugation is Voy, vas va, vamos, van, vais. 


Near Future // futuro próximo


Mañana voy a visitar a mis abuelos. Tomorrow I'm going to visit my grandparents.



This weekend Juan and Luis are going to the beach. Este fin de semana Juan y Luis van a ir a la playa.



After work I'm going to exercise. Después del trabajo voy a hacer ejercicio.



For my birthday we are going to a sushi restaurant. Para mi cumpleaños vamos a ir a un restaurante de sushi.



When I finish my studies I'm going to live in another city. Cuando termine mis estudios voy a vivir en otra ciudad.



If you have time we are going to see that movie. Si tienes tiempo vamos a ver esa película.



Next month my parents are going to attend a conference. El próximo mes mis padres van a asistir a una conferencia.



After the meeting we are going to have coffee? ¿Después de la reunión vamos a tomar un café?



During the vacations we are going to tour Europe. En las vacaciones vamos a recorrer Europa.



I'm going to live by the sea when I grow up. Voy a vivir cerca del mar cuando sea grande.



If I win the lottery I'm going to buy an island. Si me gano la lotería voy a comprar una isla.



Are you going for a run tomorrow morning? ¿Vas a salir a correr mañana por la mañana?

 Unfulfilled Intention  //"iba a" intención no realizada

      I was going to go to the movies, but I was running late. Iba a ir al cine, pero        se me hizo tarde.


We were going to travel to Europe, but we canceled the trip. Íbamos a viajar a Europa, pero cancelamos el viaje.



I was going to buy a new book, but I couldn't find it. Iba a comprar un libro nuevo, pero no lo encontré.



We were going to go out to dinner, but we preferred to stay home. Íbamos a salir a cenar, pero preferimos quedarnos en casa.



I was going to study all night, but fell asleep. Iba a estudiar toda la noche, pero me quedé dormido.



We were going to go to the party, but we got sick. Íbamos a ir a la fiesta, pero nos enfermamos.



I was going to call you, but I forgot. Iba a llamarte, pero se me olvidó.



We were going to go to the mountain, but it started raining. Íbamos a ir a la montaña, pero empezó a llover.



I was going to cook something special, but I didn't have the ingredients. Iba a cocinar algo especial, pero no tenía los ingredientes.



We were going to go to the concert, but the tickets were sold out. Íbamos a ir al concierto, pero las entradas estaban agotadas.



I was going to give her a book, but I already had it. Iba a regalarle un libro, pero ya lo tenía.



We were going to go to the beach, but it was too cold. Íbamos a ir a la playa, pero hacía mucho frío.
