Learning Spanish: When should I use Se and what does it mean?
Se is one of the most commonly used words in Spanish and, at the same time, one of the most difficult for students of Spanish whose native language is English.

Of course, the Spanish language has more reflexive pronouns and are used in exactly the same way, but to avoid confusion; they will be omitted in this article.
Se as a reflexive Pronoun: What does it mean?
In this case, Se refers to the active subject of the sentence who also receives the action of the verb. We can see it as if Subject A does something that benefits or affectsSubject A.
It is important to understand that Se as a reflexive pronoun is only used with the following pronouns or persons: Ella - She; Él - He; Usted -Formal singular you; Ustedes- You plural and Ellos - They.
From a certain point of view we could say that "the reflexive pronoun Se, can be seen as Herself, himself, itself, yourselves and themselves, but due to English rules based on the position of reflexive pronouns it should not always be translated in Spanish phrases.
English reflexive pronouns can express different circumstances such as that someone does something alone, without help, or that one learned it by itself. In Spanish, all of these can be seen as a reflexive action without much difference.
Natural Way: From English to Spanish
Lavarse - (Él)Se lavó la cara. He washed his face.( without help, alone, to himself)
Comprarse - Mi mamá se compró un carro. My mom bought a car (herself / for herself)
Sentarse - Usted se va a sentar aquí? Are you going to sit here?
Cepillarse - Niños, tienen que cepillarse los dientes. Kids, you have to brush your teeth(yourselves, by yourselves).
Bañarse - Miriam se baña dos veces a la semana. Miriam bathes twice a week.
Perseguirse - El perro se está persiguiendo el rabo. The dog is chasing its own tail.
Peinarse - La niña aprendió a peinarse sola. The little girl learned to comb her own hair (by herself).
Se as a reciprocal reflexive pronoun
Reciprocal Se is used when two or more subjects mutually perform and receive the action of the verb. In English, this use of Se is translated as each other or one another.
Los niños se peinan entre sí. - The children comb each other's hair.
Se besaron en la mejilla. - They kissed each other on the cheek.
Se abrazaron con fuerza. - They hugged each other tightly.
Se sonrieron con complicidad. - They smiled at each other knowingly.
Se despidieron con un fuerte abrazo. - They said goodbye with a big hug.
Se miraron a los ojos con amor. - They looked into each other's eyes with love.
Se sentaron uno al lado del otro. - They sat next to each other.
Se enviaron mensajes de texto toda la noche. - They texted each other all night long.
