Decir- to Say / to Tell


Simple Present + Present Subjunctive.




Certain rules apply to these verbs in English, but our Spanish verb Decir, has different rules. Having said that makes it easier to understand how Decir can be translated as both; Say and Tell.

Simple Present: Habits, Facts implies future actions 



  • Siempre digo la verdad. I always tell the truth.



  • Ella dice que me ama. She says she loves me.



  • Ellos dicen que están felices. They say they’re happy.



  • ¿Qué dices? What do you think? What do you say?



  • No digo nada, solo estoy escuchando. I am not saying anything, I’m just listening.



  • Dicen que la película es muy buena. The movie is said to be very good.



  • Mi hijo dice todo lo que piensa. My son speaks his mind. (says everything he thinks).



  • Dime. Tell me.



Present Subjunctive is used Daily: now and future



  • Ojalá diga la verdad. I wish she tells the truth.



  • Es importante que diga lo que siente.It is important that you speak your mind.



  • Yo quiero que ella diga que sí. I want her to say yes.



  • No es necesario que digas eso. You don’t need to say that.



  • Dudo que diga lo correcto. I doubt he’s saying the right thing.



  • Es mejor que ustedes digan la verdad. It is better for you all to tell the truth.



  • Él prefiere que diga yo el discurso. He prefers me to say the speech.



  • Ellos me piden que diga la hora. They asked me to tell the time.



  • Deja que digan lo que quieran. Let them say what they want.



  • Digan lo que digan, este es el mejor equipo de béisbol. no matter what anyone says, this is the best baseball team.



  • Es importante que digamos la verdad. It is important we tell the truth.



  • Nosotros queremos que digan lo que saben. We want you to say what you know.



  • No es necesario que digas tantas cosas. It is not necessary for you to say so many things.



  • Es mejor que digamos lo que nos piden. It is better that we say what they ask us to say.



  • Dudo que digan todo lo que saben. I doubt they will say everything they know.



  • Él prefiere que diga yo la noticia. He prefers that I tell the news.
