Simple & Imperfect Past + Imperfect Subjunctive.
Simple Past: One Time events in the past.
Anabel dijo que se mudaría de casa la próxima semana. Anabel said she would be moving out of her house next week.
Ya le dije a Marta lo que me dijiste. I already told Marta what you told me.
Ellos me dijeron que no vendrían a la fiesta.They told me they would not come to the party.
¿Qué le dijiste a tu hermano? What did you tell your brother?
José no me dijo nada de su viaje a París. José didn’t tell me anything about his trip to Paris.
Las autoridades nos dijeron que nos fuéramos de inmediato. The authorities told us to leave immediately.
Ella no me dijo adiós. She didn’t say goodbye to me.
Los niños me dijeron que querían helado. The children told me they wanted ice cream.
Le dije a mi amigo que lo extrañaba mucho. I told my friend that I missed him very much.
Ellos me dijeron que me apoyarían en mi decisión. They told me they would support me in my decision.
Imperfect Past: Undefined length & repeated events
Mi abuela siempre me decía cosas bonitas. My grandma always told me nice things.
Mi papá siempre me decía eso. My dad always told me that.
Ellos siempre me decían: “puedes lograr todo lo que te propongas.” They always told me: "you can achieve anything you set your mind to".
¿Qué le decías a tu hermana para que se riera tanto? What did you say to your sister to make her laugh so much?
Nunca me decía nada sobre sus problemas. He never told me about his problems.
Las instrucciones decían que debía mezclar los ingredientes en un recipiente grande. The instructions said to mix the ingredients in a large bowl.
¿Qué me decías? What were you saying? What were you telling me?
¿Qué decía en el cartel? What did it say on the sign? … on the poster?
Le dije a mi amigo que lo visitaría pronto. I told my friend I would visit him soon.
Lo siento, no decía eso. Sorry I wasn’t saying that. I didn’t mean that.
Imperfect Subjunctive:Hypothetical - Expressive - Past
Era importante que me dijeras la verdad. It was important that you told me the truth.
Ojalá dijeran que sí. I wish they would say yes. I wish they said yes.
Me gustaría que me dijeras a qué hora te busco. I would like you to tell me what time to pick you up.
Me gustaría que me dijeras como se hace eso. I would like you to tell me how to do that.
Me pareció mal que no le dijeras buenos días a tu jefe. I thought it was wrong that you didn't say good morning to your boss.
Me gustaría que me dijera con tiempo si necesito algo más. I would like you to let me know in advance if you need anything else.
Necesitaba que me dijeras cuándo vas a regresar a casa. I needed you to tell me when you were coming home.
Sería bueno que me dijeras qué puedo hacer para ayudarte. It would be good if you could tell me how I can help you.
Lo habría hecho aunque me dijeran que no. I would have done it even if they told me no.
