Estar - To Be

Simple Present & Present Subjunctive.


Estar is a very interesting verb, because it expresses only a part of what is expressed with the English verb To Be.


Learning it from translations can be very confusing, that is why we have prepared a list of common and not so common phrases, but making sure to show the different situations where we use Estar and so you can associate them with context and not with the translation, leading you to a successful learning.

Simple Present:


  • Yo estoy en casa. I am at home.



  • ¿Estás en el parque? Are you at the park?



  • Nosotros estamos en el concierto. We are at the concert.



  • Vosotros estáis locos. You guys are crazy.



  • Ellas están en la feria de comida. They are the food court.



  • ¿Estás cansado/a? Are you tired? he/she



  • ¿Dónde está el libro? Where is the book?



  • Mi mamá está enferma. My mom is sick.



  • El perro  no está en el jardín. The dog isn’t in the garden.



  • El cielo está azul hoy. The sky is blue today. (not always, just today)



  • La comida está deliciosa. This meal is delicious. (emphasize)



  • La música está muy alta. The music is too loud. (now)



  • El problema está resuelto. The problem is solved.



  • La clase está empezando. Class is starting.



  • El examen está muy difícil. The exam is very difficult. (this test, emphasize)



  • Las vacaciones están por terminar. Vacations are almost over.



  • El año está por comenzar. The year is about to begin.



Present Subjunctive: Naturally


The subjunctive mood requires phrases or words that agree with the idea expressed. When we speak Spanish, we have conjugations that express with the help of phrases our opinions, doubts and feelings among other possibilities. 

Yes, something that in English is possible with certain combinations and word order. In Spanish there is a verbal conjugation that expresses how we feel about something.

The conjugation is called the subjunctive mood and let's not forget the activating phrase or activating word. Activating phrases are in italics.



  • Quiero que estés aquí conmigo. I want you to be here with me.



  • Es necesario que estés atento/a. You need to be attentive.



  • Dudo que estés diciendo la verdad. I doubt you are telling the truth.



  • Espero que estés bien. I hope you are well.



  • No creo que estés preparado/a.  I don’t think you’re ready.



  • Es importante que estés allá a tiempo. It is important that you are there on time.



  • Te pido que estés callado/a. I ask you to be quiet - silent.



  • Te sugiero que estés tranquilo/a. I suggest you stay calm.



  • Es mejor que estés en casa. It is better for you to be at home.



  • Me alegra que estén felices. I am glad you are happy.



  • Me da pena que estés triste. I am sorry you are sad.



  • Lamento mucho que estés enfermo/a. I am so sorry you are sick.



  • Es una sorpresa que estén aquí. It is a surprise that they are here.



  • Es un placer que estés con nosotros. It’s a pleasure to have you with us.



  • Es un honor que estés en mi casa. It is an honor to have you in my home.



  • Es un milagro que estés vivo/a. It’s a miracle you’re alive




Everyday phrases:



Simple Present:


  • ¿Dónde estás? - Estoy en la cocina. Where are you? - I am in the kitchen.


  • ¿A qué hora está listo el almuerzo? Creo que ya está listo. What time is lunch ready? - I think is ready.


  • ¿Estás apurada? Sí, estoy retrasada. Are you in a hurry? Yes, I’m late.


  • ¿Estás cansado? No, estoy bien. Are you tired? - No, I’m fine.


  • ¿Cómo estás? Estoy muy bien, gracias. How are you? - I am very well, thank you.


  • ¿Qué estás haciendo? Estoy leyendo un libro. What are you doing? - I’m reading a book.


  • ¿Está bien así? Sí, está perfecto. Is that okay? Yes, it’s perfect.


  • ¿Está haciendo frío? No, la temperatura está en 40 grados. Is it getting cold? No, the temperature is 40 degrees.


  • ¿Estás triste? No, estoy feliz. Are you sad? No, I am happy.


  • ¿Estás segura? Sí, estoy segura. Are you sure? Yes, I am sure.



Present Subjunctive



  • No sé dónde puedan estar las llaves. I don’t know where the keys might be.



  • Chao, que estén bien. Bye, (I hope you’ll)be well.



  • ¿Crees que la tienda esté abierta a esta hora? Do you think the store is open at this time?



  • No sé donde esté a las 8 de la noche. I don’t know where I’ll be at 8 p.m.



  • Es mejor que estemos callados. It is better for us to be quiet / silent.



  • No creo que nos estén mirando. I don’t think they’re looking at us / watching us.



  • Hola, ¿usted cree que mi amigo esté en casa? Hello, do you think my friend is at home?



Natural questions and possible answers:



  • ¿Dónde estás? (simple present) Espero que estés bien. (present subjunctive)


  • ¿ Estás prestando atención? (simple present) Es necesario que estés atento/a. (present subjunctive)


  • ¿Estás seguro? (simple present) No creo que estés preparado/a. (present subjunctive)


  • ¿Estás cansado/a? (simple present) Te sugiero que estés tranquilo/a. (present subjunctive)


  • ¿Cómo estás? (simple present) Me alegra que estés feliz. (present subjunctive)

  Learning Spanish One Verb at a Time Future Ir a - Going to  Near Future unfulfilled intention in the past  The construction “Voy a + infinitive” is very common in Spanish and is used to express immediate future actions or nearby plans. It gives a stronger sense of intention than the simple future.
