Hacer - to Do, to Make, …


Simple Present & Present Subjunctive.



On many occasions translations do not work if they are done word by word, there are many idiomatic expressions that have a history, an explanation behind them and also different verbs that are used in similar situations.


Another play of the culture of the people.


Spanish speakers are accustomed to use verbs in the present conjugation to refer to the future and also to talk about situations that are in active progress. 



As simple as it gets: Hago - haces - hace - hacemos



  • Yo hago ejercicio todos los días. I work out everyday.


  • ¿Qué haces esta tarde? What are you up to this afternoon?


  • Yo hago la cena hoy. I’m making dinner tonight.


  • Se hacen viajes y mudanzas. Travel and moving services(are given).


  • ¿En qué supermercado haces tus compras? What supermarket do you shop at?


  • ¿Hace mucho frío hoy? Is it too cold today?


  • El profesor siempre hace preguntas difíciles. The teacher always asks difficult questions. (It would be redundant to say: pregunta preguntas - asks questions)


  • Mi perro hace mucho ruido. My dog makes / is making a lot of noise.


  • Hace tiempo que no veo a Antonio. I haven’t seen Antonio in a while.


  • ¿Haces la tarea antes de dormir? Do you do your homework before going to bed?


  • Ellos siempre hacen lo que quieren.  They always do what they want.


  • ¿Qué haces para vivir? What do you do for a living?


  • Ella hace lo mejor que puede. She does her best.


  • Hacemos un buen equipo. We make a good/ great team.


  • ¿Hace falta que te explique algo más? Do I need to explain anything else?


  • ¿Haces la maleta por mi, por favor? Will you pack for me, please?


  • Ellos hacen mucho dinero con su negocio. They make a lot of money with their business. 


  • ¿Te hace daño la leche? Does the milk hurt you?


  • ¿Qué te hace pensar eso? What makes you think that?


Bonus:



  • ¿Te hago un café? Can I make you coffee?



  • Ellos se hacen los tontos para no trabajar. They play dumb to avoid working.



  • Nosotros nos hacemos los valientes, pero tenemos miedo. We pretend to be brave, but we are scared.



  • ¿Por qué te haces el que no me ves? Why are you playing blind?


Recuerda - Remember:

  • The verb Hacer can have different meanings, such as "to perform an action", "to cause something" or "to express an opinion".



Present and Future: Doubts, Emotions, Desires



  • Quiero que hagas la tarea. I want you to do homework.



  • Es necesario que hagamos las compras. We need to do  shopping.



  • Dudo que ella haga la cena a tiempo. I doubt she will make dinner on time.



  • No creo que haga frío hoy. I don’t think it will be cold today.




  • Es importante que haga buen tiempo. It is important to have good weather.



  • Prefiero que mi perro no haga tanto ruido. I prefer my dog not to make so much noise.



  • Ojalá que no haga calor. Hopefully it will not be hot.



  • Es mejor que hagamos la tarea de una vez. It is better to do our homework at once.



  • Te sugiero que hagas algo nuevo. I suggest you do something different / new.



  • ¿Qué quieres que haga para vivir? What do you want me to do for a living?



  • Ella quiere que yo haga lo mejor que pueda. She wants me to do my best.




  • Hagamos bien las cosas.  Let’s do things right.




  • ¿A qué hora quieres que haga la comida? What time do you want me to cook?



  • No quiero que te hagas daño. I don’t want you to get hurt.



  • No me hagas reír. Don’t make me laugh.



  • No creo que probar te haga daño probar. I don’t think it will hurt you to try.



  • Es importante que haga sol para las plantas. Sunlight is important for plants.



  • ¿Crees que la música te haga sentir mejor? Do you think music will make you feel better?

  •  yo haga,     tú hagas,      él/ella/usted haga,           nosotros hagamos, 

  • vosotros hagáis,           ellos/ellas/ustedes hagan,          Ustedes hagan

  Learning Spanish One Verb at a Time Future Ir a - Going to  Near Future unfulfilled intention in the past  The construction “Voy a + infinitive” is very common in Spanish and is used to express immediate future actions or nearby plans. It gives a stronger sense of intention than the simple future.
