Simple Past: Pretérito perfecto Simple
When we are speaking, we sometimes refer to situations that have already happened and some of them are expressed with the intention of being seen as an action that happened once, and their beginning and end are known or implied by the speakers.
Hice un pastel para el cumpleaños de mi hermano. I made a cake for my brother’s birthday.
Ella hizo la tarea muy rápido. She did the task very quickly.
Ellos hicieron un viaje a la playa el verano pasado. They took a trip to the beach last summer.
¿Qué hiciste el fin de semana? What did you do over the weekend?
No hice nada especial, solo me relajé en casa. I didn’t do anything special, just relaxed at home.
Hizo mucho frío el día de la boda. It was very cold on the day of the wedding.
Hice todo lo posible para ayudarla. I did everything I could to help her.
Imperfect Past: Situations continuing in the past
Cuando era niño, hacía muchos amigos. I made a lot of friends when I was a kid.
Ella hacía la cena todos los días. She made dinner everyday. (used to make)
Ellos hacían ejercicio regularmente. They worked out regularly.
¿Qué hacías cuando te llamé? What were you doing when I called you?
Yo hacía mis deberes mientras mi hermano veía la televisión. I was doing homework while my brother watched tv. (estaba haciendo)
Hacía mucho calor en el verano. It was very hot in the summer.
Me hicieron muchas preguntas. I was asked a lot of questions.
¿Qué hacían ustedes cuando se conocieron? What did you use to do when you met each other?
Yo hacía mucho deporte en mi juventud. I played a lot of sports in my youth.
Hacía tiempo que no te veía. I hadn’t seen you for a long time.
Imperfect Subjunctive: Point of view, feel, opposite to facts
Ojalá hiciera más calor hoy. I wish it was warmer today.
Era importante que hicieras tu tarea. It was important that you did your homework.
Ojalá mi perro hiciera caso. I wish my dog would listen.
No era necesario que hicieras todo eso. You didn’t need to do all that.
Quisiera que mi hija hiciera lo correcto. I wanted my daughter to do the right thing.
Era mejor que hicieran las cosas a su manera. It would be better if they did things their own way.
Él prefería que su esposa hiciera la cena. He preferred that his wife make dinner.
Ellos me pidieron que hiciera el pastel. They asked me to make a cake.
Era importante que hiciéramos un plan. It was important that we made a plan.
Nosotros queríamos que hicieran las cosas a tiempo. We wanted them to do things on time.
No era necesario que hicieras tantas preguntas. You didn’t need to ask so many questions.
Era mejor que hiciéramos lo que nos dijeron. It was better that we did what we were told.
No dudaba que hicieran buena comida. I didn’t doubt they made good food.
Él prefería que hiciera el trabajo yo. He preferred me to do the work.
