Simple & Imperfect Past + Imperfect Subjunctive.



Simple Past


I was able to finish my work on time. Pude terminar mi trabajo a tiempo.



We couldn't go to the movies because it rained. No pudimos ir al cine porque llovió.



Were you able to solve the math problem? ¿Pudiste resolver el problema de matemáticas?



She was able to convince him to change his mind. Ella pudo convencerlo de que cambiara de opinión.



They were able to escape from the pirates. Ellos pudieron escapar de los piratas.



We were able to buy our dream house. Nosotros pudimos comprar la casa de nuestros sueños.

Did you get to see the soccer game? ¿Pudisteis ver el partido de fútbol?




You were able to travel to Europe this year. Vosotros pudisteis viajar a Europa este año.



You were able to celebrate your anniversary in Paris. Ustedes pudieron celebrar su aniversario en París.



I was able to talk to the president of the company. Yo pude hablar con el presidente de la empresa.



Were you able to talk to her before she left? ¿Pudisteis hablar con ella antes de que se fuera?



They were able to find the hidden treasure. Ellos pudieron encontrar el tesoro escondido.



Imperfect Past



She could run very fast as a child. Ella podía correr muy rápido cuando era niña.

 


She could play the piano very easily. Ella podía tocar el piano con mucha facilidad.



We could go to the park every day. Nosotros podíamos ir al parque todos los días.



Could you swim well when you were little? ¿Podías nadar bien cuando eras pequeño?



They could lift very heavy things. Ellos podían levantar cosas muy pesadas.



I could see the ocean (sea) from my window. Yo podía ver el mar(océano) desde mi ventana.



Are you sure the children could do the homework without help? ¿Estás seguro de que los niños podían hacer la tarea sin ayuda? 



You could party every weekend. Vosotros podíais salir de fiesta todos los fines de semana.



You could live comfortably in that flat, couldn’t you? Ustedes podían vivir cómodamente en ese apartamento, no?



He could fix anything. Él podía arreglar cualquier cosa.



I thought you guys could  come to my house this afternoon? ¿Pensé que podían venir a mi casa esta tarde?



They could sing like angels. Ellas (Poder) cantaban como ángeles. (The verb Poder is usually omitted in this type of sentence, mainly because it is implied.)


Imperfect Subjunctive 


I wish I could travel more often. Ojalá pudiera viajar más a menudo.

 


I wish you could come to my party. Me gustaría que pudieras venir a mi fiesta.



It was important that we could communicate well. Era importante que pudiéramos comunicarnos bien.



I doubted you would be able to finish the project on time. Dudaba que pudieran terminar el proyecto a tiempo.



I wasn’t sure you could go to the movies with me. No estaba seguro de que pudieras ir al cine conmigo.



I was hoping they wouldn't be able to see us. Esperaba que no pudieran vernos.



I didn't think you could solve this problem. No creí que pudieras solucionar este problema.



It was necessary for you to(be able to) use the computer. Era necesario que pudieras usar la computadora.



I wish I could do better. Ojalá pudiera hacerlo mejor.
