Simple Past + Imperfect Past & Subjunctive.

Simple Past

We arrived home tired after a long day of work. Llegamos a casa cansados después de un largo día de trabajo.

The bus was late, which caused us to miss the train. El autobús llegó retrasado, lo que nos hizo perder el tren.

She was not on time for the appointment, which worried me a lot. Ella no llegó a tiempo a la cita, lo que me preocupó mucho.

The kids came running home after playing in the park. Los niños llegaron corriendo a casa después de jugar en el parque.

I finally made it to the top of the mountain, after hours of climbing. Finalmente llegué a la cima de la montaña, después de horas de escalada.

The letter arrived in the mail this morning, with good news. La carta llegó al correo esta mañana, con buenas noticias.

 My friends arrived unannounced for a visit, which I was very happy about. Mis amigos llegaron de visita sin previo aviso, lo que me alegró mucho.

The package arrived damaged, which disappointed me. El paquete llegó dañado, lo que me decepcionó.

The teacher was late for class, which upset the students. El profesor llegó tarde a clase, lo que molestó a los estudiantes.

The rain came suddenly, which ruined our plans for the picnic. La lluvia llegó de repente, lo que arruinó nuestros planes para el picnic.

Imperfect Past 

While I was cooking, my brother came home. Mientras yo cocinaba, mi hermano llegaba a casa.

When I arrived at the party, everyone was dancing and having fun. Cuando llegué a la fiesta, todo el mundo estaba bailando y divirtiéndose.

they always came first in everything. Ellos siempre  llegaban primero en todo.

They were always late for class, which annoyed the teacher. Ellos siempre llegaban tarde a clase, lo que molestaba al profesor.

No matter how long I walked, I never got to the end of the forest. No importaba cuánto tiempo caminara, nunca llegaba al final del bosque.

I was always late for school. Yo siempre llegaba tarde a la escuela.

When I was a kid, I would come home from school running.  Cuando era niño, llegaba a casa corriendo del colegio.

Don't worry if you were late for an appointment, I was late too. No te preocupes si llegabas tarde a la cita, yo también me retrasé.

 

Were you on time for work every day? ¿Llegabas a tiempo a tu trabajo todos los días?

I looked forward to your arrival, I couldn't wait to see you.  Esperaba con ansias que llegaras, me moría de ganas de verte.

Occasionally, the bus would be late and that really annoyed me. De vez en cuando, el autobús llegaba tarde y eso me molestaba mucho.

Imperfect Subjunctive 

It was important that we arrived early so we wouldn't miss the start of the movie. Era importante que llegáramos temprano para no perdernos el comienzo de la película.

I doubted she would be on time, as she was always busy. Dudaba que ella llegara a tiempo, ya que siempre estaba ocupada.

I wished you would arrive soon so I could tell you the news. Deseaba que tú llegaras pronto para poder contarte las noticias.

She would not allow the children to be late for school. No permitía que los niños llegaran tarde a la escuela.

I prayed that the letter would arrive on Tuesday. Rogaba porque la carta llegara el martes.

It was necessary for us to reach an agreement before starting the project. Era necesario que llegáramos a un acuerdo antes de comenzar el proyecto.

No matter how long I waited, she never arrived. No importaba cuánto tiempo esperara, ella nunca llegaba.

It was impossible for her to arrive on time, as the plane was very late. Era imposible que ella llegara a tiempo, ya que el avión tenía un gran retraso.

I was worried that she would not arrive safely at her destination. Me preocupaba que ella no llegara sana y salva a su destino.
