Quedar & Quedar(se)

to Agree - to Stay - to Be




Simple Past + Imperfect Past and Subjunctive.


We use Quedar / Quedarse to indicate a state or situation, to agree on something, when something is left over, to subtract something and also to refer to staying in a place. 

For this reason we can see that this verb has different meanings.




Simple Past // Pasado Simple


Last night we were supposed to meet for dinner, but in the end, no one showed up. Anoche quedamos en reunirnos para cenar, pero al final nadie llegó.



The store was closed all day because of an electrical problem. La tienda quedó cerrada todo el día por un problema eléctrico.



I had no choice but to cancel the trip due to lack of time. No me quedó más remedio que cancelar el viaje por falta de tiempo.



The glass was left on the table and broke when I cleaned it. El vaso se quedó en la mesa y se rompió cuando la limpié.



The movie stuck in my memory. La película me quedó muy grabada en la memoria.



The house was left empty after the tenants moved out. La casa quedó vacía después de que se mudaron los inquilinos.



Dinner leftovers were left in the fridge. Las sobras de la cena quedaron en la nevera.



The car ran out of gas in the middle of the highway. El coche se quedó sin gasolina en medio de la autopista.



We arranged to meet at the park entrance at five o'clock. Quedamos en encontrarnos en la entrada del parque a las cinco.



The gate was left open and the dog came in. La puerta quedó abierta y entró el perro.



I fell asleep on the couch and missed my favorite show. Me quedé dormido en el sofá y perdí mi programa favorito.



The job was finished just in time for the deadline. El trabajo quedó terminado justo a tiempo para la fecha límite.

Imperfect Past // Pasado Imperfecto


We would meet in the park every afternoon to play. Quedábamos en el parque todas las tardes para jugar.



The house would go dark when the lights went out. La casa se quedaba a oscuras cuando se iba la luz.



I would stare out the window for hours. Me quedaba mirando por la ventana durante horas.



We were always in debt after we went out to eat. Siempre quedábamos en deuda después de salir a comer.



Food would stay in the fridge if we didn't eat it on time. La comida se quedaba en la nevera si no la comíamos a tiempo.



The child was left crying every time his mother left. El niño se quedaba llorando cada vez que su madre se iba.



The train was stopped at the station because of a delay. El tren quedaba parado en la estación por un retraso.

 


We would stay up late talking with friends. Quedábamos hasta tarde conversando con los amigos.



Clothes became too small as the child grew. La ropa le quedaba pequeña a medida que crecía el niño.



The car would run out of battery if we didn't use it often. El coche se quedaba sin batería si no lo usábamos con frecuencia.



I stayed home studying while my friends went out to have fun. Me quedaba en casa estudiando mientras mis amigos salían a divertirse.



The door would be left ajar and a cold draft would come in. La puerta quedaba entreabierta y entraba una corriente de aire frío.

Imperfect Subjunctive // Subjuntivo Imperfecto



It was important that we stayed in touch after we moved. Era importante que quedáramos en contacto después de mudarnos.


 


I doubted you would stay in town. Dudaba que te quedaras en la ciudad.




They advised us to stay at home to avoid contagion. Aconsejaron que quedásemos en casa para evitar el contagio.




I hoped she would not stay alone in that big house. Esperaba que no se quedase sola en esa casa tan grande.



It was necessary to be clear about the terms of the contract before signing. Era necesario que quedaran claras las condiciones del contrato antes de firmar.



I was afraid he would be out of a job after the company closed. Temía que se quedara sin trabajo después del cierre de la empresa.

 


I didn’t think I could have a piece of cake for dessert. No pensé que me quedara un trozo de tarta para el postre.



It was crucial that they agree on the date of the meeting. Era crucial que quedaran de acuerdo en la fecha de la reunión.



I suggested that we meet somewhere quieter to talk. Sugerí que quedáramos en un lugar más tranquilo para conversar.



It didn't matter if it was quiet, I just wanted her company. No importaba que se quedara en silencio, solo quería su compañía.



It was imperative to get things in order before traveling. Era imprescindible que quedasen las cosas en orden antes de viajar.



I wanted him to stay with me a little longer. Deseaba que se quedara conmigo un poco más de tiempo.
